Harvest Monday - March 19, 2012

We were visiting California last week and I had a chance to pick some fruits from a kumquat tree I planted many moons ago, the fruits will be made into marmalade/jelly and preserved with salt/sugar for cooking, drinks, or desserts.

  1. That's one gorgeous tray of kumquats. How much did it weigh? Those lemons are beautiful, lucky you.

    There are 12.5 lbs of kumquat in the tray.

    It would grow, you'll have to move it indoor in the fall, it doesn't like temps below 38F.

  6. Kumquats is not a familiar edible to us. Looks very cute. Nice harvest.

I love kumquat marmelade - its definitely my favourite marmelade, sometimes I make it as a normal marmelade and sometimes as a clear jelly. unfortunately my mums tree died this year and it will take a couple of years for mine to bear sufficient fruit so I will have to go without for awhile. Enjoy yours!

    Sorry about your mum's tree, maybe next year you'll get some from your own tree.
    I plan to make some jelly with this batch, but it'll have to wait a while, I'm too busy to deal with it now.

    Kumquat rind is sweet, the meat is a slightly tart, when the fruit is tree ripen it has a very nice sugar-acid balance not tart at all.
