Harvest Monday - June 21, 2010

Celebrating Summer Solstice
Summer squashes, peppers, eggplants, and piracicaba broccoli.

I have been picking one or two squashes everyday, and the piracicaba broccoli provides side shoots every two to three days, eggplants and peppers are coming in slowly, maybe I get to pick some tomatoes soon.

This week's harvest:
Celtuce (final harvest) 23 oz
Lettuce (final harvest) 8 oz
Napa (still growing) 16 oz
Broccoli 7 oz
Eggplants 7 oz
Squashes 29 oz
Peppers 3 oz

Total for the week  -- 5.81 lb

I pulled some German Extra Hard garlic the other day to check
for size, most of them are rather small, some are marble size,
hopefully the rest will bulk up soon.  The red skin one in the
middle is a Chesnook.

Visit Daphne's Dandelions host of Harvest Monday to see what other gardeners are harvesting this week.

Allison,
Thank you for dropping in, your carrots look good, I don't think my carrots have bulk up yet, I'll have to check.

Another blogger celebrating summer solstice! We are going to make a sun shaped cake, I think, with fresh picked cherries. Don't have any of those lovely sunny shaped squash yet though I am happy to announce the first zucchini.

Very lovely harvest!

I love the look of your summer squash and will have to see about finding that zephyr variety next year. It looks like you had a very nice harvest this week.

Very nice and creative photo of your beautiful harvest!

I love your basket! I am looking for that type of basket and don't find them in town. I'll need to go all the way to LA to find them, I'm afraid.

harvesting eggplant and broccoli at the same time is quite amazing to me. I will try this piracicaba variety. I wonder if I can even plant it now...

Ottawa Gardener,
Happy summer solstice! I'll try to sow some seeds today as you suggested, and congratulations on your first zucchini, if there's any fresh cherry cake leftover I'll take a piece please.

Mr. H.
Thanks for visiting, I'm dreaming of a harvest like yours (yeh, big dreams).
The zephyr squash is a hybrid from Johnny's.

........

Robin,
Thank you, and thanks for visiting.

........

Angela,
I think you can plant the piracicaba broccoli now, e me.

I bought the bamboo basket/tray from Thailand through a friend who lives in Bangkok. Other smaller baskets were purchased from different places on my travels, it's difficult to find these handmade household items in the states. I did purchased 2 small bamboo baskets from The Wok Shop 3-4 years ago in SF Chinatown (http://www.wokshop.com/store/main.php) phone 888-780-7171.
They don't show the bamboo baskets/trays on their website, but you can call to see if they still carry them.

.........

Jane,
Thank you.

A lot of my garlic this year is German Extra Hardy. It looks like it is doing well but the lower leaves haven't died off yet so I'm being patient. My onions however have to start bulbing up soon. I hope they do.

Summer squash is beautiful. I can’t wait for my broccoli to be ready for harvest.
Happy summer solstice!

I love the look of that Zephyr squash and like Angela, the basket too. Your summer vegetable harvest is way ahead of mine, my squash isn't even mature enough to bloom yet.

those squash are beautiful and so is the photography - but you can't eat the picture.

I love that two-toned squash! Your Piracicaba broccoli is doing about like mine, I have to pick it every 2-3 days. You have a very nice variety of vegetables.

Mac said...

Daphne,
Hope your onions bulb up for you soon before the new owners move in.

........

vrtlarica,
Hope your broccoli head up soon so you can get more side shoots.

........

michelle,
Everybody seems to like the Zephr squash, I like the texture, it's firmer than zuchinni (bias opinion!)
Our sunlight is more intense than low land, maybe that's why our summer veggies mature sooner.

........

johanna,
Thank you.

........

Villager,
Thank you, I like the 2-tone also, it's something different from the dark and light green varieties.

What a nice looking harvest. I'm curious what Celtuce is. I'm going to have to look further on your blog.

Great harvest Winnie! Now I'm wishing I had grown some yellow squash. Those are beautiful.

I'm growing some German Extra Hardy myself. I pulled on up the other day. I was pretty decent sized but could use a few more weeks in the ground.

Emily,
Sorry to disappoint you, this is the first time I grow celtuce and I forgot to take pictures, I'll be growing it again in the fall hopefully I remember to snap some photos to show my readers.

.......

Thomas,
I grow 3 kinds of garlic, German Extra Hardy is the first to bulb up, the leaves of Chesnook, Asian Red and White are still very green, maybe couple more weeks in the ground would do it.
