Found 2 packages of wolfberries in the pantry
and thought it might be fun to see if
they are viable.
I sowed 1 berry per cavity on 3/1/2008
at room temperature with no bottom heat.
Right: Older seeds, small and ugly looking
Left: Fresher seeds, larger and better looking

12 days later they sprouted.
The older seeds sprouted first
and the fresher seeds sprouted a week later;
who says fresher is better?
The seedlings were moved outdoor
to a greenhouse with no heating 5 days later.
Mid March daytime temperature: 50s-60s F
Nighttime temperature: 20s-30s F
The seedlings survive 30-40 degrees
temperature fluctuation without damage.

These seedlings are from the older berries,
they sprouted first and are the strongest,
89% germination rate is very very good
for old seeds.

These seedlings are from the fresher seeds,
67% germination is not bad but compare
to the older seeds these newer wolfberry
seeds are losers.

Dear Mac
Web, ++
或許你們都知道的我還是雞婆一下---soak the berries until soft then break open the berry to expose the seeds before covering the berries with soil.
Mac:
Thanks you for your tips, I will try it and let you know the result.
Can not wait to share a little bit "ba gua" with you.
A frind of mine sent me a bare root plant of "xiang chun" couple weeks ago. Her mom wants me to plant it in the container first and replant it into my backyard when the weather warms up. This litle baby grows ok in its container right now.
Web,
Wow "xiang chun" will it go dormant in the Winter? Do you have to grow it in container and bring it inside? This plant will grow very big over time?
I bought a small bay leave plant today, but it must be grown in container and bring it inside the house to winter over. My friend in CA has one in her backyard year round.

Mac,
I think 'Bay Leave' you can leave it outside all year around should be OK!
Our here they all leave it outside, and our is all lot wet...ter!
Does 杞子is it 九杞's seed?
Somebody said yes ,somebody no say?
I'm confess!!
I've a few 九杞 grew in my allotment for pass 3 year, always comeback after long wet cold winter! They've flower but never set seeds!
Cool
我是無聊,沒事找事做,maybe that's empty nester's syndrome.
Shar
Yes, 杞子is 九杞's seed. I have wolfberry plants in our old house, they flower and set seeds, but the seeds are much smaller than the market type because I neglect them and don't water and fertilize them.
Your plants should have seeds too if they flower, maybe your chickens ate the berries.
Your baby chicks are sooooo cute!
Mac buddy
Bangkok Hai
Buddy Mac
No, no, thanks, my dear,
QQQ 1M.
Leaving-hai, ^^
Mac,
Any growth update on your goqi experiement? I learned the lesson to not plan the Beared Iris deep and grow in rich soil. The tuber root should sit barely beneath the surface when planted.
Cool
The gouzhi seedlings is growing bigger, but I don't have time to transplant them to a permanent place yet. I should do it pronto because they are too crowded and showing signs of stress.
I have some gouzhi vines to share if you're interested (after you settle down at your new home of course), e me when you're ready.
Hi Mac: I decided to experiment and planted 10 Goji berries in a big pot outdoors in full sun. 2 berries are seedlings now. They look like clumps in your pictures. It's been 1 week now. Are they easy to take care of? So far I'm just watering daily. How long does it take for them to grow their second set of leaves?
Your blog is very inspiring!
Tammy,
Thanks for the compliment.
Goji is easy to grow, I don't remember how long it took them to get 2nd set of leaves, have patience, they will grow for you. They are perennial, but dies in the winter, you may want to keep those seedlings in a warm place in the winter, even in SoCal.
